FRESH AIR FOR YOUR Z31
PICS COMING SOON ! ! !
I did this because I have a cone filter and I wanted more fresh outside air than what the current setup offered me.
I got to looking at my hood one day, and conjured this idea up. Many of you have questions about it and how rain
in particular will affect it. I only drive my car on sunny days, as I have a second car. If you live in a rainy
atmosphere, you might consider not doing this mod. Although, going down the road in the rain will not soak your
filter and get into your engine, maybe when you stop at a light, will you get some down in the holes. But not enough
to ruin your engine or anything. Plus, the K&N filter has oil in it to protect it to some degree. Below are a list
of steps and pictures on how I did this modification.
I first made a template out of cardboard, and centered it under the hood. Then I drew a outline of it with a magic
marker. Then I drilled a small hole in each corner of the outline so that I could move the template to the top of the
hood. I then repositioned the template just covering up each of the holes, and drew the outline again. The jigsaw
would be easier used from the top of the hood. I then put some clear tape to keep from scratching the paint by the
jigsaw. Then, I used a larger drill bit to make a hole that would allow the jigsaw blade into the hood for a starting
point.
Now you have 2 new holes in your hood. Lets make them look good. I took a file and cleaned up any burrs or uneven spots. I got some door edge guard and went around the holes. Then I got some fiberglass black screen mesh and cut it into some squares that would tuck under the hood. I then super-glued the mesh just to hold it in place and pull the slack out of it.
Then I used black RTV silicone to secure the screen mesh in place. Your results should look something like this. I think it adds an agressive look to the front of the car, Not to mention a little bit of fresh air.
